Housing Development Corporation (HDC) on Thursday refuted allegations that the company had unlawfully spent millions on the re-election campaign of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

HDC had faced accusations of spending heavily on the president's election campaign during his campaign trail. Sources were also cited on local media that HDC's recent financial decline was due to expenses amounting to millions of Maldivian Rufiyaa spent on President Yameen's campaign activities.

Responding to the accusations, an official of HDC told local newspaper Mihaaru that the corporation had not spent any company funds for the presidential campaign.

"HDC did not make any illegal expenses for PPM (Progressive Party of Maldives)'s campaign. It is a false accusation," he said, asserting that all of HDC's expenditures were in accordance with the law.

The corporation also warned to take legal action against those spreading misinformation amongst the public.

HDC further denied accusations that its CEO Ahmed Bunyameen, who actively participated in President Yameen's campaign in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale, was behind the funding of PPM's campaign.

"These falsified talks are being spread against HDC and Bunyameen in order to hinder the political futures of certain figures," said the official.

He also pointed out that HDC has already commenced an internal audit on the company's expenditures, and assured that the truth will become clear to the public. However, the official did not disclose any details of the audit.

Meanwhile, the Auditor General's Office has also decided to conduct a special audit on HDC due to the accusations levied against the corporation.

While HDC has rebutted the allegations against it, documents leaked to the public by some senior officials of the corporation indicate that HDC had spent millions of Maldivian Rufiyaa on PPM's presidential campaign.

Following the leak, accusations began to circulate on social media that HDC was planning to destroy the documents, which the corporation has also denied.
